How to paint Shamrocks with watercolor using negative painting.

Happy St Patrick's Day! May the luck of the Irish be with you!

This is a fairly easy project. You only need a few shades of green and maybe a blue.  When I'm practicing negative painting with repeating shapes, I like to number the shapes according to where I want them to be in the picture.

For example, the shapes I want to appear in the foreground, I mark with a tiny number 1. The shapes I want in the middle ground, I mark with a tiny number 2 and so on.

In this project, the flowers are the white of the paper. When I apply the first wash of color, I paint around the flowers, leaving them white. Let that wash dry completely.

On the second wash, I carefully paint around the shamrocks that have been marked with a number 1 and the flowers, painting over everything else. Let that layer dry completely.

The third wash is applied carefully painting around the flowers, the shamrocks marked with a 1 and shamrocks marked with a 2. Let that layer dry completely before going to the next layer.

Repeat this process until you have all of the shamrock defined by painting around them.

I hope this demo helps! Please let me know if you have any questions or need help! As always, if you give this painting a try, I would love to see what you paint!
