3 Tips for painting Strawberries with watercolor

watercolor demo May 11, 2022

Strawberries are so delicious and juicy that I just couldn't resist painting some before the season ends. I hope you give them a try. They aren't difficult to paint and the results are so satisfying.

3 Tips on how I paint strawberries:

1. I like to use cadmium yellow as the underpainting for the strawberries. I think that yellow gives them a beautiful glowing quality. Wet the paper first and then drop in the cadmium yellow but be sure to let some of the white of the paper shine through.

2. Allow each layer to dry before adding the next layer of color. Then wet the strawberries with clean water and apply the paint. This will make each layer look soft and free of hard lines.

3. Instead of cadmium red, I use a permanent rose for the color of the strawberries. This lessens the chance that the yellow underpainting will make the strawberries appear orange.

Bonus Tip: Use Dr. PH Martin's bleed-proof white as the highlights on the strawberries. You can also use white gouache or colored pencils.

I really hope you give this a try. If you do, post it on my Facebook Group, Art With Viv Insider's Group, so I can brag on you!
